Incredible Things Happen Through Purposeful Play

Play is one of the greatest elements of childhood. It brings joy, creativity, socialization and nurtures development. There are many articles about Purposeful Play, but I hope that my description will inspire you to give it a try!

Purposeful Play is facilitated by a parent or teacher at first, and then the kids quickly learn and love the play experience they are given. I have a center in my classroom with empty shelves, known as my "Purposeful Play" center. I change the theme and materials monthly and the kids can't wait to see what is coming next! For example, I may set it up like a grocery store with as much authentic items as possible. Lots of empty food boxes, milk jugs, egg cartons etc. Some things are filled, like a bag of rice or bottle of shampoo. I provide real coupons, receipts, shopping baskets, and bags. The cash register and money are pretend, just to be practical! On the first day the center is open, a teacher helps to facilitate the play by assigning jobs, selecting customers, and explaining the entire process as we play. The next day, the magic happens! The children are able to really get into their roles and use their imaginations. We often connect the Purposeful Play Center to our Kitchen Center. Two children may be in the kitchen cutting coupons and making their list. They put their baby in the stroller and head to the grocery store! It is adorable!

As cute and fun as this experience is, incredible things are happening. The children are so engaged in their play, that they aren't asking when they can "switch centers". They are actually building their attention spans, which is so important in today's fast paced world of technology. They are also building social connections with their peers as they use more verbal interaction then they might with typical free play. During free-play, some children may still be drawn to parallel play, not engaging with classmates. Suddenly when they are given a role to play through Purposeful Play, they are talking and interacting with their friends. They learn to progress from parallel play to collaborative play. I will group children who participate in parallel play with other children who are great at expressing their imagination verbally. I love to see children help their peers develop through play. Often in this center, the children learn how to patiently wait in line for their turn to purchase. The children are also gaining a connection to our community by bringing real places into their play space. The children always enjoy a trip to the grocery store or post office, when they have experienced that in their Purposeful Play Center.

I know as teachers and parents, we are already offering wonderful experiences for our children. I promise you that adding Purposeful Play will enhance their friendships and development! Here are a few ideas for Purposeful Play Centers:

Grocery Store

Restaurant

Post Office

Vet

Groomer

Doctor's Office

Space Center

Bakery

Garden Center

Salon

Any place in your community!

I will keep you posted on what I add to my Purposeful Play Center this year and I'd love to hear from you too!
